The 14th Asia-Oceania Meteorological Satellite Users’ Conference (AOMSUC-14) is being held on December 4-6, 2024, in New Delhi, India. The conference is hosted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Ministry of Earth Sciences and will feature presentations, panel discussions and a training workshop focused on applying current satellite data for meteorological and climatological applications.
The conference aims to: promote the importance of satellite observations; advance satellite remote sensing science; provide a platform for dialog and collaboration between satellite operators and users; inform the community about the current status and future plans of international space programs; encourage the development of new technologies for weather satellite sensing; and engage young scientists in the field.
There will be approximately 150 participants from different countries, as well as domestic participants. Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Minister of State in the Department of Atomic Energy, and Minister of State in the Department of Space, is scheduled to inaugurate the conference on December 4 at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.
Other dignitaries attending the conference include Dr M Ravichandran, secretary at the Ministry of Earth Sciences; Nilesh M Desai, director of the Space Application Centre (ISRO); and Dr Allen Huang, chair at the AOMSUC.
The first AOMSUC was held in Beijing, China, in 2010. Since then, the conference has been hosted annually in various locations across Asia and Oceania. The AOMSUC welcomes meteorologists, earth scientists, satellite operators and students from across the region and the globe. The 14th Asia-Oceania Meteorological Satellite Users’ Conference promises to be a valuable event for all those interested in the use of satellites for weather, climate and environmental applications.
The AOMSUC was preceded by a two-day international training workshop on December 2 and 3 at IMD, New Delhi, at which there have been 70 trainees from different countries, including India.
The AOMSUC will be followed by an international coordination meeting of members of Regional Association (RA)-II and RA-V countries at IMD, New Delhi, on December 7. All these events will help in international coordination and capacity building for the important application of satellite products in weather and climate forecasting and services.
